Legal Representation for International Union of Police Associations (IUPA) Members

OVER $1 BILLION IN RECOVERIES FOR OUR CLIENTS

International Union of Police Associations (IUPA) , image of two police officers smilingThe International Union of Police Associations (IUPA) stands as a pivotal entity exclusively dedicated to the betterment of law enforcement and law enforcement support personnel. With its roots tracing back to 1954 as the National Conference of Police Associations (N.C.P.A.), the organization has evolved into a dynamic force, continually shaping the landscape of the law enforcement profession.

Comprising both active and retired officers, IUPA members passionately strive to enhance the lives of their fellow law enforcement colleagues. However, their impact extends beyond fraternal support, as IUPA plays a crucial role in shaping legislation vital to the safeguarding of public safety officers.

An experienced attorney can be of great use to IUPA members, particularly following a workplace injury, wrongful termination, civil rights violations, and other employment issues that may arise. At Disparti Law Group Accident & Injury Lawyers, we have the skills and expertise to provide the best legal representation for any employment issues or workers’ compensation claims.

Significance of the International Union of Police Associations (IUPA)

IUPA’s historic journey saw the organization’s transformation into the International Conference of Police Associations (I.C.P.A.) in 1966, welcoming affiliations with local Canadian police associations. Recognizing the imperative for a unified voice, the International Union of Police Associations emerged to fulfill this need. In 1979, IUPA received its charter, becoming the first union to provide independent representation for the law enforcement community within the organized labor movement, solidifying a partnership aimed at enhancing the personal and professional lives of law enforcement professionals across the United States.

Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

The union’s influence expanded significantly over the years, championing legislative initiatives of paramount importance. One notable achievement was the instrumental role played by IUPA in amending the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) in 1986. These amendments transformed American policing, ensuring equitable treatment for law enforcement officers regarding working hours and compensation. The tireless efforts of IUPA General Counsel Mike Leibig in presenting the case before the U.S. Supreme Court underscored the union’s commitment to an independent and robust law enforcement union.

Law Enforcement Officer’s Relief Fund (LEORF)

The Law Enforcement Officer’s Relief Fund (LEORF), established in 2011, embodies IUPA’s commitment to supporting officers and their families during times of dire need. As the 21st century unfolds, the organization’s impact remains formidable. I.U.P.A. continues to be a catalyst for positive change, influencing legislation, safeguarding collective bargaining rights, and steadfastly standing as the primary advocate for the welfare of America’s law enforcement personnel, regardless of department size or location.

Since the 1990s, IUPA’s reputation as a preeminent advocate for law enforcement has fueled remarkable growth in membership, expanding its influence to encompass police and sheriff’s departments nationwide. This expansion also embraced corrections officers and law enforcement officers in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Embracing a spirit of solidarity, IUPA confronted challenges to protect overtime pay for law enforcement officers, culminating in the passage of the Harkin Amendment through Congress.

Workers’ Comp Lawyer for Injured Police Officers

A workers’ compensation lawyer specializing in cases involving injured police officers can go a long way in maximizing compensation for IUPA members. Having a dedicated legal advocate can help ensure that those who put their lives on the line to protect and serve their communities receive the support they need when facing work-related injuries.

A work-related injury can negatively impact an officer’s ability to perform their duties effectively and may even have long-term consequences for their overall well-being. An experienced workers’ compensation lawyer can help injured police officers by guiding them through the intricate process of filing a claim, compiling evidence of the injury taking place at work, and advocating for them in case the claim is denied or disputed.

An attorney can also assist in gathering relevant medical documentation to substantiate the extent of injuries in order to get an accurate calculation of the compensation you are owed. Any added stress can affect a person’s ability to heal from a work-related injury. Having an attorney in your corner can help reduce the stress of handling your claim, allowing you to focus on your recovery.
