What Caused the Snapchill Canend Coffee Recall

Snapchill’s canned coffee products are distributed nationwide through various coffee roasters. The cold coffee company prides itself on their patented technology that seals in the flavors and aroma of the coffee.

However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered that Snapchill’s manufacturing process “could lead to the growth and production of the deadly toxin, botulinum, in low acid canned foods.” Consuming botulinum toxin can lead to a severe type of food poisoning called “botulism.

What Products Are Being Recalled?

If you’re coffee enthusiast, you’re probably familiar with coffee roasters such as Dark Matter, Wild Goose, Snowy Owl, or Intelligentsia. Unfortunately, these brands are only a few of the coffee companies that were impacted by the recent Snappchil coffee recall.

The recalled products are sold in a variety of metal can sizes ranging from 7 oz to 12 oz and are identifiable by words “Produced and distrubuted by Snapchill LLC” near the nutrition facts panel.

If you frequently drink canned coffee, take a look at the FDA’s list of recalled items to check if you’ve consumed any of the potentially toxic coffee or if you still have some stored in your fridge. If you do, destroy what’s left or send them back to Snapchill. If destroyed, Snapchill will offer a full refund with proof of purchase and a picture of the product(s) before they are destroyed.

Signs of Food Poisoning from Recalled Coffee

Signs of food poisoning from recalled canned coffee can include a range of symptoms due to the presence of botulinum toxin. These symptoms often begin six hours to two weeks after consuming the contaminated coffee. Initial signs may include general weakness, dizziness, double vision, and trouble with speaking or swallowing.

As the condition progresses, individuals might experience difficulty breathing, weakness in other muscles, abdominal distension, and constipation. Due to the severity of these symptoms, it is crucial for anyone experiencing these problems to seek immediate medical attention.

Foodborne Illness and Product Liability

Foodborne illnesses may fall under product liability laws, a type of tort law that allows one to recover damages for a defective item. In the case of Snapchill’s canned coffee, their product was recalled due to a defective process that may create a toxin that can make consumers severely ill.

A manufacturer may be liable in a product liability case if the injured party (plaintiff) can prove by a preponderance of evidence that the direct cause of their illness was the defective food. So, for example, if you become ill after drinking a recalled Snapchill canned coffee, they may be liable if you can prove the coffee was the direct cause of your illness.

What to Do if You Get Sick

If you do get sick, you may need to contact an attorney to file a claim. Filing a foodborne illness claim may be necessary to receive compensation for expenses caused by a defective product. Damages you may be able to collect include:

  • Medical bills
  • Lost wages
  • Pain and suffering
  • Emotional distress
  • Punitive damages
