What is a Snow Squall and Why Are They So Dangerous?

We know by now that tornadoes in Chicago are possible, but what about tornado-like snow storms? This is just one way that some would describe a snow squall.

Thanks to the notorious lake-effect, Chicago and the surrounding areas are particularly suceptable to this weather event.

What is a Snow Squall?

A snow squall is a brief but intense snowfall accompanied by strong birsts of wind. This weather phenomenon, often associated with cold fronts, can create whiteout conditions and extremely icy roads.

Similar to a tornado warning, the National Weather Service may issue a snow squall warning. Alyways take these warnings seriously, especially if you have travel plans at that time.

Snow Squall vs Blizzard

Snow squalls and blizzards, while both characterized by strong winds, are not the same weather event. A snow squall is short-lived (around 30-60 minutes), localized geographically, and only accumulates an inch or two of snow.

Blizzards, on the otherhand, can last several hours, impacts a broader geographic region, and can accumulate several inches of snow.

Are Snow Squalls Dangerous?

Snow squalls are extremely dangerous. Stay home and avoid driving at all cost if a snow squall warning has been issued in your area. The icy roads and low visibilty create deadly conditions for drivers.

Drivers may stop or exit their vehicle, unaware that other drivers may not be able to see them or have time to stop. Therefore, multi-vehicle accidents are common during a squall.

How to Stay Safe Driving During a Snow Squall

Due to the short and intense nature of these storms in a small geographic location, it might not be possible for you to know one’s coming if you’re already on the road. Follow these tips on how to stay safe if you must drive during a snow squall.

1. Find Shelter

As soon as it’s safe to do so, pull into the nearest business parking lot or take the next highway exit. Fortunately, squalls are short-lived, so finding a coffee shop or restaurant to hole up in until it passes is usually the best option.

2. Drive Defensively

If continuing forward is the best option for you during a squall, then you must drive defensively. Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you and allow ample time to slow down and stop if needed.

Avoid slamming on your breaks and instead pump them or gradually press down depending on the type of vehichle you drive. Additionally, remain aware of your suroundings while checking your rearview mirror in case the person behind you cannot stop.

3. Stay in Your Car

Say you cannot continue forward or exit the road, then your safest option is to stop and pull over into the shoulder. Turn on your and hazard lights and always remain in your vehicle.

In whiteout conditions, you cannot trust that the other drivers around you can see you. It is much safer inside a vehicle rather than out in the open with no physical protection..

4. Keep a Winter Emergency Kit in Your Car

Even though snhow squalls pass quickly, drivers may still be stuck in their vehichles for a while before first responders are able to reach them. That’s why it’s best to keep a winter emergency kit in your car consisting of essentials such as a blanket, flashlight, food, first aid, shovel, warm clothes, and other survival items.

Contact an Car Accident Lawyer

As aforementioned, snow squalls significantly increase the risk of a severe car accident. And, since they can often involve multiple vehicles, it may be helpful to contact an car accident lawyer. In these situations, insurance companies are notorious for giving low-ball offers in order to save a buck.

The attorneys at Disparti Law Group would not allow that to happen. You deserve to be made whole following an accident outside of your control.
