International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT), image of painter in all white with mask on The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) stands as a formidable collective representing an ever-expanding group of skilled individuals across the United States and Canada engaged in the Finishing Trades.

These trades encompass a diverse range of professions, including Industrial & Commercial Painting, Drywall Finishing, Glazing & Glass Work, Sign & Display crafting, Floor Covering Installation, and other integral careers within the construction industry and public sector.

Rooted in the ideals of solidarity and mutual support, the IUPAT traces its origins back to the 19th century, a pivotal era in the development of labor movements. The Brotherhood of Painters and Decorators of America, formally established in 1887, was the initial incarnation of this union.

In a remarkably short span, the organization managed to amass a membership exceeding 7,000 skilled craftsmen and more than 100 local unions. This rapid growth underscored the recognition that unity held the key to addressing the challenges and inequities faced by workers.

Central to the success of the IUPAT was its ability to bring disparate individuals together under a common banner. As the union’s influence grew, it became a catalyst for change, driving remarkable advancements in working conditions and wages that had previously seemed insurmountable. The rallying cry of “Single-handed we can accomplish nothing; but united there is no power of wrong we may not openly defy” echoed through time, encapsulating the spirit of solidarity that defined the union’s ethos.

Presently, the IUPAT remains committed to its founding principles, continuing to uplift working families and bolster the middle class. Throughout its history, the union exemplifies the power of collective action, demonstrating that when skilled individuals join forces, they can transform not only their own lives but also the broader landscape of labor standards and worker rights. As the IUPAT forges ahead, it stands as a testament to the strength that comes from unity, a legacy of progress and advocacy that endures to this day.
