According to a recent study by the Florida Department of Transportation, drivers of cars and trucks are most often the ones responsible for accidents involving motorcycles.
By analyzing 10 years of Florida motorcycle accidents, the study found that 60 percent of the time drivers of other vehicles are at fault in collisions with motorcycles. Failing to yield right of way is often the cause of accidents.
However, the study also discovered that motorcycle riders are much more likely than drivers of other vehicles to be involved in a single-vehicle crash. Thirty-four percent of motorcycle accidents involved one vehicle while the same was true for only 19 percent of car crashes, as a truck accident lawyer knows.
Chanyoung Lee, a senior researcher at the University of South Florida’s Center for Urban Transportation Research, encourages drivers to look twice for motorcycles. Lee also suggests that bikers should wear bright clothing to make themselves more visible.
